"What would you do Doc?"

In this article by Australian doctor and author Ranjana Srivastava, she offers some great guidance on how to approach the challenge of decision making at the pointy end of life. Her advice; rather than ask the doctor what they would do, ask the doctor what factors they would take into account when making their decision. Many people "don't know what they don't know" especially when it comes to complex health care decisions. How do we make a truly "informed decision" without all the knowledge and experience that the experts hold? This comes back to the need for early conversations about what matters most to us, what gets us out of bed and motivated each day; what brings us joy. When we are clearer about that, we can take this information into conversations about how we want to spend our time. Through contemplation and taking our time, we can hope to approach the end of life with more grace, more agency and greater hope for a "death by design" rather than being swept along by forces outside our control.
